S4 vs. C5

Well, I had an experience last night with a good friend.
He drives a 2001 Corvette w/auto
We thought we would do a little testing and drove west on BeLine Highway where the roads are straight and empty.
To put things in the right prospective, my buddy can drive his car. There is a difference in driving even in an automatic. Making sure the car is in the right gear is crucial when the auto trans doesn't want to kick down.
Anyway, the races were very consistent. The first race was a rolling start at about 50mph. 1, 2, 3 and we're off. Immediately I jumped 1 car length on him. The race is dead even up until the middle of my 4th gear. He starts edging forward and gets beside me. Both of us not needing any tickets, we decide to limit the speed of our races.
Now comes the drag race. We did a complete stop and counted out. I do not remember what my tach said being that I never look at it in a race.
On 3 I launched forward so fast that I had to make an effort for the shifter. Even though the C5 was on the throttle, it looked like I was launching and he was standing still. He did not advance the 1 ½ car length position between us all the way up to the middle of 4th gear. When I let off the gas before shifting to 5th I could barely see the nose of his car in the corner of my eye.
After the race, he said he was just amazed at how the car shot off the way it did.
I have to say, I am a little disappointed in losing the high speed battle but then again, you can't win them all. ;-)
Anyone else with similar experience?
