Default Scorch, some info on the Ultima GTR...

The price for my kit was $45,746. This also included shipping, wing, wheels, body flash removal, body prefit, leather seats, air con. The kit includes basically everything but engine, gearbox, adapter plate, tires, exhaust, headers, dash and cockpit leather/carpet trimming. To save money (maybe $5000 or so) you could drop stuff like leather seats, wing, body prefit etc. I would not drop the upgraded suspension or brakes. The lower spec stuff is junk from what I hear.

On top of that price I bought the following items:

Race prepared Porsche G50/52 gearbox (rebuilt)with external oil cooling, custom ratios, steel synchros, billet shift forks, Billet side cover, LSD, Adapter plate, clutch, starter, oil pump, clutch slave cylinder. This was supplied by PowerhausII and all up cost $13,700. You will need this and possibly more (Quaife or Hewland) when running over 500 ft/lbs with R compound tires on the track. Anything in the 400 - 450 ft/lbs would be Ok with a slightly modified used G50/52 (in the $4000 to $6000 range).

Street tires are Michelin Pilot Sport 335x30x18, 235x35x18 and cost $1700

The engine I am putting in is a bored and stroked LS6 with 422ci. This will put out about 575hp and 550 ft/lbs of torque. Including dry sump setup this cost $24000. If you bought a used LS1 and did heads, cams and LS6 intake then you could get about 450hp and over 400 ft/lbs for approx $7000 - $9000. On top of this you will need custom headers and exhaust that will probably cost around $2000 - $3000.

What I have described would build a killer car that NO production car would touch in terms of performance (except F1, Zonda C12 etc). If you can get a motor cheap and cut out some of the extras I think you could build still a very fast car for a lot less than mine. Even with a stock 350hp LS1 the car is a rocket ship.

Fitting an engine other than a S/B Chevy or LS1 will make life more difficult. The factory will not support you if you go your own engine route. You will need a custom engine/gearbox adapter and clutch setup. Also a custom harness and modified ECU. It can definately be done if you have some experience or don't mind paying someone else to do the work. I know of a twin turbo Audi V8 version that used the prototype Cosworth engine developed for the RS6. There is also a BMW M5 version around and a twin turbo Alfa romeo. The people who built these work in the car business and have a lot of experience.

As for ease of build I would say that after watching my friend build his it is relatively easy. Where life gets difficult is if you deviate from the standard engines or add lots of fancy electronics. Fitting the body can be tedious and requires patience to get a professional looking result. Thats why I paid the factory to prefit mine. For around $1800 I couldn't justify the time to do it myself.

Hope this helps.

Default thats awesome man! ....

if this comes to fruition in the near future, i would want to go the route of a totally custom custom car. I would be willing to drop some cash on a skyline or supra engine (plus i would get a company that Im involved in to work on it), the only issue that I can think of would be traction control, especially with a single monster turbo- are there aftermarket traction control systems? We definetly need to run the Gumball when our cars are finished :-) keep me posted on everything that youre doing, ok? thanks again!
