Default Shifting 101: Some n00b questions..

Since the S4 is my first car with a manual tranny, I'm still learning how to properly shift.

I've heard about a lockout to prevent accidental shifting into reverse and 1st, but what about 2nd? Is there a max speed / rpm that would prevent going from 3rd to 2nd with the clutch engaged? I was trying to downshift going through a 90 degree corner < 35 mph when I felt like I was locked out.

Forgive the noob ?, but I'm kind of learning as I go here.

Default There's no 2nd gear lockout...

I've shifted into second at over 60 mph (clutch in of course, at a track).

Default our trannies get sticky sometimes. you may find that shifting into the lower gears

and reverse can be a chore. try again and it should work, especially when you're warmed up. Just obviously don't shift into 2nd at too high a speed (tops out around 60 or so)

Default always rev match your downshifts.

saves your synchros and it gets around some of the 6sp's notchiness.

Default I think you mean double clutch downshifts...

If you just rev match while the clutch is in, the only thing you're going to save is the clutch.

To save your syncros you're going to want to double clutch so that the dog teeth in the tranny spins with your control and doesn't require the syncros to do all the work. Of course, it will save your clutch too like rev matching downshifts.

But yeah, rev matching doesn't save your syncros, double clutching does.
