Short shifter and shift knob installation...

Short shifter and shift **** installation...
Installed my UUC short shifter (w/ 40% reduction) yesterday and it rocks! My only complaint is that fifth gear is still too far for my liking. It took a few adjustments of the lower linkage to get the gating to where I hope it to be perfect. One comment in regards to the instructions is why bother with removing the shift boot, I simplying slid the boot collar off the shifter and snapped the console panel off and volia one needless step eliminated.
I have driven a stick shift for many years but felt that the S4 magnified my failings at working the clutch and gas pedals for seamless shifts. However, the drive last night went flawless! What happened, might it have been a poorly adjusted shift linkage from the factory, the factory shifter, or that I am dreaming?!
I was about to install my new 'Momo Cobra' shift **** when I realized that the shift boot has a plastic collar that prevents the boot from being slip down. Must I break this plastic collar off so that I can install the shift ****?! [Hopefully not, but I do not see any other way.]
Thanks!<p>Baiano

Solution . . .
Get the Momo boot to go with the ****. Here's how it works: The black screw part of the **** screws off and screws directly into the Momo boot for seamless appearance and use. I bought the boot to go with my Combat **** which is being installed as I write this. If you only have the ****, you will have to leave the universal black screw piece in so that it will stay on the shifter, otherwise, buy the boot, go for seamless and do the whole 2-piece install. I included a link for you. Good luck!<p>"I'm that Blue Menace in your rear view!!!"<ul><li><a href="http://www.vwaftermarket.com/catalog/interior_acc/default.asp?product_group=shift_boots&action=step_ two&title=MOMO%20Shift%20Boots">http://www.vwaftermarket.com/catalog/interior_acc/default.asp?product_group=shift_boots&action=step_ t
