Default Short Shifter and Syncro Probs? Please Help

Hey all..

I just purchased a 2000 S4 and was seriously considering putting on a short shifter because the throw is soo dam long. Does anyone know if there have been a history of problems with syncro's when people put on the SS's..... Also what brands are recommended..?

Thanks for your help...

as far as i know a SS does not void warranty. this suggests no modification to the OEM spec and therefore no issues with the syncros. i would like to hear what others have to say.

Default Well, keep in mind that while a SS shortens the throws,

the synchros are still the same. They don't speed up. Your shift time is still the same. If you treat your SS otherwise, you will mash the synchros. That's probably the argument a dealer would give for why they would not cover failed synchros if you have a SS. And technically, they could be right.

if you don't 'wait' for the shift you will destroy any syncro, short shifter or no short shifter. i do agree that a dealer would like to blame any failure on an aftermarket performance part.

I just installed a UUC short shifter this weekend in my 2001.5 S4 Avant and I am amazed at the difference. I find that my car actually shifts smoother that with the stock shifter. I also installed an APR snub mount at the same time and which could also be responsible for the improved feel. I would highly recommend the combination.

Default 1st-2nd syncro prob's are somewhat common in S4's in general...also, the stock throw really isn't...

that long...try driving a mustang GT sometime...or a toyota..haha

Default With the exception of the manufacturing defect I had in my tranny, everyone I know whose had a ...

failed transmission had a short shifter...

Like Daphne said, people think a short shifter can speed up their shifts, and they munch the synchros. Badly installed ones can cause bent shift linkages and other more serious problems, too.
