Short Shifter and Syncro Probs? Please Help
#13
my theory (don't expect the dealer to buy into it):
A short shifter REDUCES the mechanical advantage of your shifting lever. Thus, for the same force applied to your shift ****, there is LESS force on the syncros. Thus, a short shifter should not itself increase syncro failure.
However, short shifters tend to be heavier than the stock shifter, and especially when combined with a weighted **** (like I have) there may be far more impact on the syncros when you shift quickly. This could lead to syncro failure.
As far as the majority of S4 drivers with failed syncros having short shifters, I'm not sure I believe this, but if it is true, it does not mean that short shifters cause syncro failures. It may well be that people who tend to shift very aggressively tend to buy short shifters.
My syncros had problems within a couple months of my buying the car - a lot of grinding, etc. and I do not shift aggressively. I've had no problems since getting my short shifter (>10k miles on tanoga shortshifter); however, I never rush shifts, and I almost always rev-match and double-clutch my downshifts, so my syncros don't have to do much work. I do think our cars have crappy syncros, but certainly aggressive shifting may cause premature failure. However, I'd tend to think a weighted **** or a maladjusted shifter would be more likely to cause problems.

Notice that "I know" in there? Yes, stock trannies fail. The 6-speed sucks, no questions... but
you'd be hard pressed to claim that a short shifter didn't contribute to the already sucky synchros failing.
Its like people who claim that running 30% more boost through their K03's has nothing to do with turbo failures...

Agreed. I was worried the dealer would give me crap for...
... the after market **** that I've got on there that sits just a little lower than the stock. No problem on that but it still took them two weeks to get it done.
