Default Smokin' brakes

Hey all -

I was doing some pretty hard braking the other night (showing the car off to some people) and after a couple hard stops, I noticed smoke coming up, and was relieved to see that it wasn't coming from the hood, but I was slightly taken aback that I was getting smoke from just a little bit of agressive braking, but what's worse is that the car reeked of burnt brake pad (asbestos?) for the rest of the night. What's up with that? Is this just another part of the weakness in the stock brakes everyone has been talking about?

Default The stock brakes are hardly weak....

unless you commute on a fast roadcourse! Unless it was wet, it is very strange for the breakes to be actually smoking. That smell is nothing compared o burning clutch smell - much worse and much more expensive!

Default The stock brakes SUCK for a car like this!!!!!...

... why would brakes be smoking on a wet road?
it's not to strange for brakes to smoke when used hard. especially if they are relatively new.
the stock brakes are the most screwed up config i have seen for a high(er) end car.
how often do you smoke your clutch?

I have no problem with the stock brakes and I think they work quite well. I have never experienced fade and they can activate ABS - anything more would be a waste. Unless you re experiencing fade or the brakes cannot lock up the wheels, swithching to fancy brakes will not make any difference. Of course, if you race, then you may encounter fade which would make bigger brakes useful.

I am not sure that new brkaes should smoke - I don't know what would cause that. I asked about it being wet because driving thorugh water would cause the water taht comes in contact with the rotor, pads and calipers to steam.

I have never smoked the clutch on th is car, but I have done it on many others.

BTW, I am not being critical of anyone who elects to upgrade the brakes ont he S4, I just don't see the need for it on a street driven S4, to each his own.

Default stock brakes vs upgrade (long)

I am running stock brakes for one year (60.000 Km)
I agree that those brake are good for day to day normal driving. There are a lot better than the A4 or normal sedan car.
If you drive hard for time to time, you are reaching the limit of the brakes really fast even if the limit is high, once again I agree. A few weeks ago I went to Germany and I had the opportunity to drive an S4 (not an Avant) with the big red porshe brakes (322 front and 299 rear) I must admit that it is another world. This is really impressive.
At least, this one is a security improvement. Even if it gives you the possibility to brake later and harder. If you win one or two meter for your day to day use, one time it could be really helpfull.

Default Stock Brakes Fine for the Street

The stock brakes will safely and effectively stop the car from 65mph on the street. There's no need to upgrade the brakes for street driving in this country....driving the autobahn's in Germany is a different story. SD
Steve D'Gerolamo

Default I agree... Car and Driver tested the S4's stopping distance shorter than the M3, which is lighter.

how do they suck then? just curious, because I'm thinking about buying the S, and you really can't test the brakes on a test drive.

Default Just got back from a track event this past weekend...

Something I want to point out is this car owned by Alan deJesus is very modified and very fast, but has stock brakes. He ran this car on what I consider a short track with alot of hard braking for two days without a problem from the brakes. This car was MOVING too, he was not babying it at all, and the stock brakes did just fine...

Maybe you just took your brakes from cold to hot too quickly, or maybe you had tire dressing or some other cleaning chemical on your rotors???
Jason C
