Snow chains?

Snow chains?
Anyone ever actually use them on the California mountain passes? I don't plan to unless as a last resort. But if I'm in such dire need of tire chains, should they be on the front wheels or all four wheels? I have Potenza SO3's.

Get snow tires if you expect snow. End of discussion.
if you can, you want chains on all 4... otherwise just the front, I guess.
you're not supposed to use chains, tho... cables *may* work if they are really low-profile.

Don't do it.
If you have an S4, chains won't fit. Period. Even if you downsize to 205/55-16 winter tires (mine stay on until May) they won't fit. With 225 or wider (which you probably have if S-03's), no way on Earth.
Two options: snow tires or take a different vehicle.
FWIW, back in the days when chains would fit (i.e. my old 4000CS and Coupe Q's) the Audi manual always said that with quattro chains go on front wheels only.
