dealer is going to check it here in a week or so, but it has happened several times that my oil light will come on a thousand miles or so before i go in for a 5k change. just wondering if there is a known issue or something specific i should have checked.
Using Mobile 1 5w30.
TIA

Default Not normal. I've never had the oil light come on.

And I lose very little oil over the course of the 5k miles between each oil change.

Default '00 S4, here, 57K, no oil use at all.

I really expected about a 1/2 quart of use over 3K miles of so, but so far, no major oil usage or leaks.

No way, that's definitely not normal.

Default I would suggest checking the oil at least every 500 miles or so so you catch it before the light

comes on. I don't have any significant usage between oil changes (but I have never gone 5k on the same oil). My oil has never strayed from outside the cross-hatched area on the dipstick; I use M1 0w-40 exclusively.

The dealer will tell you that up to 1 qt every 1800 mi is not excessive. IIRC

That is not normal at all. Do you change your own oil?

Default Seems a little excessive, Ive had the oil light come on once and..

I probably burn 1/2 a quart every 4-5k miles.

Default Did you buy your car new or used?

How the engine was broken in makes a big difference in how much oil you burn. Thats not a lot of oil to burn... its a lot for an well-broken-in S4, but the dealer's going to tell you its just fine.

It just means your rings didn't break in as well as they could've. I broke in the engine in both my S4's meticulously and never burned a drop in either. I did the same on the rebuild in the engine in my 911, a car that is notorious for burning oil. I don't burn a drop there, either.
