You're an idiot. Please step away from the keyboard.
MBC only allows you to set boost below, above, or at the software's specified level.

the homebrew movement.
I believe APR and AWE have now delivered both power and drivibility (I think anyway?), not to mention ASP and other new players.
Homebrew could be losing a bit of momentum, but will always be the cheapest solution retaining a great combination of power and drivibility. One could argue that the TCD could defeat some of the sw protection, and more importantly the issues associated with tweaking with lemmi could prove to be a bad combo for some.
Keep in mind the homebrew movement was created because the end users just were not happy with the what the tuners had to offer.
Many of us had purchased a kit or two.

Running K04s on K03 code does NOT require a 5bar FPR. This is only needed if you want to max out the stock fuel system. The overboost issue may not even occur with all setups (I have no 1st hand experience here...), and likely wouldn't occur with more conservative software that ramps boost more slowly (MTM, etc).
It's all about compromises, but you have to weigh both sides of the equation. K04s provide better reliability due to decreased shaft speeds, the potential for more power down the road, and lower IATs. The only tradeoff is the *possibility* of adding an MBC in parallel. IMHO, the benfits far outweight the drawbacks.
