After it was all done I removed the bar and it kind of popped because there was too much tension along the top run of the belt. It now wont go back on easily and I don't want to force it.

Can anyone tell me what went wrong?

Default You popped off the cam pulleys first right? They need to spin freely while tensioning the belt.

Torque the pulleys back down with the cam lock bar in place after you tension the belt.

video of pulley spinning

Yep, that's what I did. The pulleys were free wheeling. Cam bar was on.

Default 1st.. Do you have the crank lock pin.. 2nd. you no longer have tension on the belt, so

its not going to be the same.

Default Is your tensioner working properly? It should take a minute or two to compress it and detension the

belt.

Soo, lets check order of operations

pulleys free spinning
cam bar in place.
tensioner pin pulled
apply 15NM torque to the tensioner pulley to tension belt
remove 15NM torque
torque cam pulley bolts
remove cam bar

?

Default Crank lock pin was in. So did I have to much tension on the belt? If I put the same tension on the

belt the bar will probably go on.

Default Re:order of operations.

pulleys free spinning Yes

cam bar in place. Yes

tensioner pin pulled NO

apply 15NM torque to the tensioner pulley to tension belt Yes

remove 15NM torque No

torque cam pulley bolts Yes

remove cam bar Yes

I didn't pull the pin on the tensioner. I had a friend hold 15nm of tension with a torque wrench and pulled the pin after.

Bently dosen't actuall say to pull the pin ever.

Default Tensioner is brand new. Works fine. I must have had too much tension on the belt when I tightened

the cam gear bolts.

Thaks Nick.

Default Odd, the old bentley I have mentions it

"Using a hex key, turn toothed belt tensioning roller -1- clockwise 8 mm in direction of arrow until special tool T 400 11 can be removed."

T 400 11 = pin thingy

Then it says to tension belt to 15nm and then tension cam pulleys.

Try this:

pop the cam pulleys again
put cam bar back on
slowly detension the tensioner pulley until the belt is slack
allow the tensioner to extend on its own
use your torque wrench to apply the 15NM of torque to the tensioner
take off torque wrench
then tighten the cam pulleys again

Default Ok, new parts are good :) If you follow what I just posted above it should come out fine

I did a timing belt just this last weekend, even after turning the engine over enough to bring the timing belt around 1 revolution of the belt I was still able to wiggle the cam bar back in place.

Good luck!
