So I took my car in for a squeaky steering column-->more
Diagnosis was bad PS pump and dead tie rod ends. My S4 has 24K miles with zero track time. In fact, I do not really ever have the time or energy these days to stretch its legs. Sad, I know.
Power steering pump failure I will chalk up to simply a faulty part, but tie rod ends? After 24K easy miles? Would that be caused by potholes and generally bad roads around where I live?
Just wondering what your opinions are since I don't hear many people screaming about these as "common problems" like BPVs etc.
thanks

A squeaky column and all that needed fixing? Weird.

My squeaky steering column was fixed with a 30 cent spray of lithium grease on the universal joint right before the shaft goes through the firewall. If the sound was coming from inside the car how/why were they looking at the PS pump and tie rods?

is this the "common" squeak, or a lesser known one?
reason I ask is that I have the column sqeuak as well. I was quoted a whole new steering column and 3-4 days of the car out of service to replace the whole thing. In my mind I imagined my car's interior in multiple pieces, so I told them not to, even after they ordered the parts. To me it sounds like a rubbery rubbing noise, but from around where the wheel butts up to the plastic column surround trm piece.

That's what mine sounded like too.
Almost sprayed some stuff by the steering wheel, but was worried about the airbag, and airbag wiring so I investigated further and found it to be the u-joint in the pic. You can't see it in the pic, but the u-joint has some plastic/rubber contact points. Also this joint gets hot, either from the engine, or PS retlated parts so if you decide to give it a shot use something that can withstand some heat.
