Default So I'm reading up on speedzone.com about laser jammers...

They've previously published that a laser beam is 18" at 500 feet, which makes you wonder whether the beam from their targetting point (plate or headlight) would even be seem by the typical windshield mounted detector. Their tests pretty much demonstrate that you won't get a warning.

"The Valentine One was the only detector to report laser when the laser was fired at a vehicle in front of it in the Trailing Vehicle Test. However, it did not see the laser when it was fired at the normal aiming point at 500 feet or 1000 feet. No detector reported laser when it was aimed at the front license plate or the headlight at both 500 feet or 1000 feet."

Default Then how do Lidatek and other laser countermeasures work?

I've detected laser before with my 8500; it still scatters, just not nearly as much as radar.

Default It's hit or miss.

The officer will probably move just a bit, and at 500 feet, that movement will be magnified. But still...those guns are pretty damn precise, and a laser detector only improves your odds marginally, even if you're following a rabbit.

Default The placement of the receiving/transmitting unit is usually

in very close proximity to the license plate/headlights. They've done that for a reason...it's the only way to make the system effective. I'm sure if there was any way to make a windshield mounted unit that was effective, they would do it...because god knows they are losing a LOT of sales simple based on the fact that these "systems" need to be "installed".

Default hence, my Lidatek sensor is located an inch below my front plate ;)
