So what are the advantages of running a wider tire in the rear?

An advantage in only one situation ...
During trail braking, since the rear would be less likely to break loose, you could brake harder and later into a corner. For better lap times on track, though, corner entry speeds are less important than exit speeds.
During corner exit, the rear tires have additional grip because of the load transfer to the rear, even with identical tires front and rear, but AWD. The table shows the load distribution of my S8 during various phases of a corner, <A HREF="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/36145.phtml">Load Distribution Revisited</a> provides further explanation.
