Default Here's what you did...

I know cause I did it. In prying out the chip, you broke a solder joint in the socket and now your car just sits there with a dead ECU ignoring you.

You replace the chipped chip and it still doesn't work.

A quick solder fix by the installer is in order...THIS is one of the reasons I like to use a local tuner because obviously I had to drive the ECU down there in another car to get it fixed before I could get my S4 running again.

The chips/ECUs are quite robust from zapping but those solder joints can only withstand SO much.

Default Bare feet.

Also you can touch something that is grounded.

It's usually okay if you take off your shoes and touch something metal which is touching the ground. It's not 100% guarantee (only touching "ground" yourself is) but it makes the chance of static discharge very small.

Default What I always do/have learned is install the new chip in the ECU, screw in 2 torqs and

plug it in. Go into the car and turn the key to the on position (when all the dash lights start flashing and such). The little EPC light should show up on the same side as your tach. If it comes on then you have a complete circuit in the ECU. If not, then pull the thing open again and fiddle with it a bit. Worst comes to worst, Garrett can send you a new stock chip for dirt, dirt cheap.
