i just stopped by a nearby 76 to get some gas. as i insert my credit card and open up the gas cap, one of the attendants walks by and mentions that they're out of 91 octane gas. puzzled, i look at gas pump but find everything to look normal. the attendant then tells me that if i select 91 octane, only 87 octane will come out... he continues by saying that a supply of 91 octane gas will be coming in in about 1 hour. "er... okay," i say. i close my gas cap and leave...
now the thing that bothers is that there was no sign or warning that this gas station was out of 91 gas. if that attendant hadn't come by, i would have filled up my car with crappy 87 octane. especially for a turbo car, this wouldn't have been good. furthermore, i would paid the premium price for regular gas. now what if my car was chipped? oh dear.....
this can't be right or even legal...
btw, i still need gas =P

....That there's an additive that's added to EITHER:
- 87 to make it 89
...or...
- 89 to make it 91.
That two of the three fuels come from the same tank, but the higher of the two has an additive squirted in while you're fueling with that one selected.
Sorry....I can't remember whether he said the additive was in the 89 or the 91.
I'm in CA, BTW. I'll clarify w/him today, if nobody knows the final answer in a few hours.

i always thought that 91 gas was just like 100 octane diluted down to 91. similar idea for 87 gas: 100 octane diluted with some additive to make it 87 octane...
cause isn't that why we have different gas companies like mobil, chevron, 76, texaco, etc? they all use different additives?

empty, you'll probably get 87 from everything.
They used to use MTBE to raise the octane levels, but Calif. is outloawing that, so they have switched to Ethanol.... not nearly as efficient at raising octane levels...
*sigh*

so i would say until and unless they mechanically changed that in each and every pump, it would be virtually impossible for you to get any other grade of gas other than the one mentioned. And if they are out, than nothing would come out of the nozzel period. Being in the gas station industry for 10 years, i have yet to see a station in which their tanks and gas supply from the tanks is automated and interchangeable. So don't think that you would get jipped out of your money or OCTANE
