Default I almost got killed by a state pig once...

My girlfriend was driving at the time, we were in the left lane on Rt. 2 East around Leominster or Harvard or somewhere around there. Radar detector goes off, but she's barely speeding, so she only taps the brakes. A state donut-muncher who was hiding behind a stand of trees FLOORS it and pulls out RIGHT in front of us, to chase a car in front of us; he's only going about 30 when he enters the highway, and Rachel locked the wheels (no ABS on her '93 Probe GT) to avoid hitting the pig.

I never did get around to filing a formal complaint with the state police, but here a cop almost killed 2 or 3 people just to give some poor sap a $150 or so ticket (nobody there was speeding by much... maybe 70 in a 55).

Default well, most speed limits are too low

as evidenced by:

1) most people speed

2) most people would not go arbitrarily fast w/o speed limits; I still doubt I'd go much past 80 with ANY traffic on the road, even if there were no speed limits

3) NHTA regs state that speed limits should depend on engineering studies, and should be set such that they correspond to the 85th percentile speed. In other words, so only 15% of drivers speed.

4) Most towns (and sometimes this is at the state level, but it's much worse with municipalities) set speed limits *illegally* low (below what engineering studies would support) so they can bring in ticket revenue - NOT so they can reduce speeding.

Should cops ticket people for going way too fast? Yes... but maybe only in traffic. If it's 3 AM and there's NO traffic on the road, what's the harm in going 90 or 100? At the same time, if I'm going only slightly above the speed limit, but am constantly cutting people off and endangering them, I really SHOULD get busted, but probably won't, because cops are generally too lazy to look for bad driving; stopping speeders is easier.

Default People resent cops for enforcing laws they don't like. Very simple. Also:

People know DAMN well what a scam it is that the
insurance industry actively supports and directly
funds efforts to catch even meagre speeders since
the relationship is mutually beneficial: If LIDAR
units are supplied to police with the collusion of
insurance companies, the increase in rates (profit
for the insurer) is "justified" by getting caught,
and the state gets money from the actual fines. I
line your pocket, and you line mine.

This situation, to a lot of people, is extremely
cynical and corrupt, and has a lot less to do
with safety than it does with enriching a few at
our expense.

Default Man, what they need to do is up the speed limits!! we are in the year 2002!! 65MPHS is not that fast

!! cars are modern now a days.. with better breaks. We need to up the speed limit by 15 miles per hours. 80 sounds like a good number

Default If these cars were operating here in CA, I sure as hell wouldn't pull over for them!

Not with how easy it is to buy a fake badge/uniform and install fake light bars/strobes!

I'd keep driving until they call in the first MARKED patrol car. But by that time, you'd be watching me on the news! First S4 in a police chase!

Think if I put a big a$$ "www.goapr.com" sticker on my roof they'd give me a discount on their stage3?

:P
