Speculation: S4 could beat a Viper, Corvette, M5, E46 M3, 2WD whatever across an intersection...

Many of these cars have equivalent or better 0-30 times than an S4, but the S4 would still be ahead of them at 30MPH because of the launch quattro enables (Viper might be a stretch). A quattro launch doesn't just make a launch easier than what the same driver could do in a RWD car, it enables a launch that is better than is possible in any 2WD car regardless of the 2WD's car's driver's skill (not counting drag slicks for tires though). Many people, unless referring to the 1/4 mi. always refer to 0-30, 0-60, 0-100, 0-xxMPH, but in standing start races, what matters is time to distance not time to MPH. While a lot of RWD cars get great 0-30 times, some better than the S4, the S4's 60' times are likely faster because the S4 takes off out of the line faster. At 20MPH, a more powerful 2WD car begins to gain speed much faster than an S4, thus some of the 0-30 times are the same or better than an S4, but the S4 has been ahead becuase it was able to get moving the first 20 MPH in less time and distance than a 2WD car is capable of. So at the time 2 cars that both cars are doing 30 MPH (1.6 seconds is what I think an S4 will do it in), the S4 is probably a few or several feet ahead, but the more powerful RWD car is gaining on the S4 already and will have a much better 0-40 time (esp. since the S4 shifts into 2nd at 34 and many more powerful 2WD cars don't shift into 2d until 40-something MPH) than the S4, and will be going slightly faster than the S4, but probably won't actually catch the S4 until the 2WD car is going 35, 40, 45 or 50+MPH (depending on how much more powerful the more powerful 2WD car is). I believe R&T publishes 100' times of cars they road test, or at least they used to. They do publish 500' times, and of RWD cars that are a little faster than the S4 0-60 & in the 1/4 mi., the S4 is often even or 0.1 sec ahead at 500', even though the speeds at the 500' mark are probably about 70MPH for the S4.

LCP,
I've read it three times and I can just *sorta* make out what you are saying. Try to use paragraphs next time!!! (grins) I think I get your main point, which I agree with.
The quattro/turbo combo is a great combo for driving in the real world. The S4, esp. a chipped S4, could beat many of these *supposedly* faster cars on our US roads because of its great traction and early peak torque.
Also, a stock S4's 0-30 times are about 1.8 seconds, not 1.6. My guess is that chipped manuals get to 30 in about 1.5 seconds, though.
