Default speed sensor?

Hello,

driving my 2000 B5 S4 home last night after a few days in the long term airport lot - suddenly noticed the speedo is stuck on zero and the engine check light is on. The odometer wasn't incrementing either.

Dug out the vag-com and read the codes today and under "engine" I have:
16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor: Implausible Signal P0501 - 35-00 - -
and under "navigation"
00625 - Vehicle Speed Signal 03-00 - No Signal

So I guess the obvious candidate is a bad vehicle speed sensor...I have no idea where to look for that. I've searched and searched the forums and have read that it's in a tricky place on the transmission, and then I read that it's mounted on the rear diff. Can someone tell me definitively where it is? Is it one of these that I likely need?

Or is there likely something else wrong?

any help appreciated, thanks,

-Richard

Default

There is a speed sensor on the forward diff. as well. It is hard to get to but I think this is the one that you need to replace: http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_S4-...nsor/ES251435/
