Is it true that with turbo-charged engines you are supposed to let the engine idle for a minute or so when you start up and when you shut down.

Good idea for any car.

It's also wise to let the turbos spin down, and cool off, before shutting the engine down, yes.
It can be done two different ways that are practical, either w/ a turbo timer, or by granny driving for the last few minutes of driving. This only pertains to a car that's been driven relatively hard, though, when engine temps are higher than casual around town driving.

i think it is a VERY good idea to let your engine idle for a minute before shutting it off. I believe it helps stabilize temps and let the turbo slow down especially if you were running it hard. Others here TOTALLY disagree with me so there you are. But then I have a superior TIPTRONIC too, and all the EXPERTS agree that a stick shift is better right up until the time that they destroy their gearbox by adding a short shifter and not knowing how to drive a stick in the first place. (A good driver in a tip will take the average driver in an S4 with a stick almost every time.)
I think I must be going crazy....well my tour over here is almost up so I think it doesn't matter much.
Cheers

you should take it easy until the oil has time to heat up. There once again seems to be some debate as to whether or not you need to let the car cool down after driving it hard. I always let it sit 1-2 mins at idle and I also take it easy for the last few minutes of the drive. Some people don't think this is necessary because of the water cooled turbos in the 2.7T engine.
Actually letting the car sit and idle after starting it will cause more engine wear, at least according to the manual. I assume since the oil will take longer to reach its optimum operating temp. Start the car and drive it, don't let it idle.
