Hey all,
I'm a very(!) happy owner of a new s4 avant, and am going to be using it a lot as I commute over Berthoud Pass in Colorado on a weekly basis. I've already had some "concerning" moments with rough potholes during the summer, I don't want to imagine what will happen in the winter.
Plus it's easier to mount Blizzaks to a rim and swap wheels.
Does anyone know a wheel/price for that wheel that fits our vehicles?

Luke at the TireRack (877)522-8473 x362, or Eddie at the TireRack (800)428-8355 x369 can help you with winter tires and wheels.
There are a number of 16" and 17" wheels that aren't too costly, which will fit the S4, so you should be able to choose something, and get your winter tires. You may want to consider a set of the stock wheels for winter.
The popular winter tires last year were:
Michelin Pilot Alpin
Dunlop M2
Pirelli 210 and 240
Bridgestone Blizzak LM22
Make sure you buy your winter package (wheels and tires) by, or before, November, or you may have trouble getting what you want.

Apparently, the size of the calipers prevents any other material for rims.
Send an email to luke@tirerack.com and he'll explain.
But the good news is that I did find 16" ATPs rims w/205s Dunlop M2 Wintersports. For $1000 total (tires, rims, mounted, shipped)
Great setup, good in the dry, good on highway, low road noise, more tolerable than 17 low profiles, and AWESOME IN THE SNOW!!!
75mph in a New England blizzard on route to snowboarding...foolish? yes, but fun =)
and the time I chased an old Quattro 90 avant up and over a mountain road...Wow! that guy was incredible.

...I'm getting a brand new set of take-off's from an A6 2.7T owner for $500 for a set of four wheels (no tires), and then I'll have some 205-55-16 snows (probably Dunlop WinterSport M2 (or perhaps the M3 if it comes out?!?) mounted on them.

Stick to the ground like glue in snow, not quite so good as Blizzak in ice, but generally just fine. (Ie, I could always drive the speed limit in heavy snow, I'd have to slow down with everyone else if it was ice, but car handled fine) This was all running the (very) stiff MTM springs, so the car handled beautifully even though it was slammed.
I went with the 240's because I wasn't willing to sacrifice dry-road handling that much by going with an H-rated snow tire in a narrower width. The 240's are V-rated, handled as well as the Blowtenzas the car came with on dry roads. I have mine on the Avus wheels. I'd comfortably recommend that combination to anyone who lives anywhere where the roads aren't always snow covered during the winter (which is just about everywhere thanks to snowplows).
Plus they looked badass on the car ;-)
You can see how low the car was, less than 1 finger gap in the front.
