Default STFA already, advice on helmet purchase needed.

I'm going to attend a driver training course the PCA and ACCNA are organizing in Lanham, MD next weekend and I need a helmet. Budget of $200. Please don't give me that "you can't put a price on your head" crap guys, there is *no* reason a decent helmet should cost more than that. I don't know if they require SA rating, but I think the SCCA does, is this correct? I'd appreciate some brand/model and retailer recommendations. TIA.

Default First off...

try to borrow a helmet, you might buy an expensive helmet and find you don't like tracking your car. Second, purchase a "2000 SA" rated helmet. A "95 SA" helmet will probably be fine for the event, but I think the SCCA and similar organizations are going to disallow 95 rated helmets in a year or two.

I can't offer much advice, except to say buy used if possible. And definitely don't buy online, you want to make sure it's comfortable.

Default If your budget is limited to $200, there isn't a lot to choose from. I would get an SA rated helmet

no point in possibly restricting yourself from events because of your helmet. A few of the helmets under $200 are:

G-Force Pro Force Hybrid (SA2000)
$200 from www.racerwholesale.com

G-Force GF750 Open Face (SA2000)
$150 from www.racerwholesale.com

BELL Mag 4 (SA2000)
$158 from www.racerwholesale.com

Default Ummm.....

First off, I know this topic was discussed about a week ago. Search the archives and you will get a whole lot of info, including brand and vendor recommendations.

Second, it's not about "spend the most you can on a helmet." It is about purchasing a helmet that fits you properly. An ill fitting helmet will not protect you if you are in a major accident. Furthermore, an ill fitting helmet may obstruct your view of the road and may make you so uncomfortable that you will become distracted or tired on the track.

Please go try on helmets to see which ones fit and then purchase one. And please, get an SA2000 helmet, as it will be accepted at all events.

Default even though you may have a budget, you need to TRY them on...

my experience with motorcycle helmets is that some high end models "look" better than others, but arent comfortable at all...

you need something that you will be able to wear for hours on end and not get sick of wearing it.

my advice: try them on! then try some more on when you think youve had enough. youll be much happier imo

Default Thanks. I'm definitely going to try them on. I was just trying to get some brand/models (m)

so that I could narrow that down and go try them on for size, then buy online where it's cheaper. I know $200 isn't much of a budget, but I don't want to spend $400 dollars on something i'll probably do no more than twice a year.

I would never buy a used helmet - who knows what someone did to it. (Dropped it, etc.)
