Stock Rim Tire Sizes Question (TIA) (revised)
I have read a lot of posts in the archives about tire sizes for stock rims, but am still unsure as to which would be best. I know that 225/45/17 is the stock size but have read both good and bad reviews about using 235/40/17 and 235/45/17. Does anyone have some good advice as to which of these 3 sizes would be best on stock rims? Also, is there much benefit to going with a bigger size? I have read that the stock rims can fit all three tire sizes. Thanks.

late 90's M3 came oem with 235/40-17 on same sized rims
235/40 is very slightly shorter than stock overall. The 235/45 are taller than stock. You'll gain traction with the wider tire but you could also gain grip by using a better quality stock sized tire.
Personally, I'd leave the stock rims w/stock tires. Get other wheels and tires for summer. Here's a good tire size calculator.

http://gs.tolan-hoechst.com/tirecalc.htm
