Default strange noise coming from the front of the engine:

There's this noise coming form the front, you can hear it better if you get close to the grill. It sounds like a sewing machine and sometimes it sounds like a idle chainsaw, and sometimes it makes a high pitch sound. It used to do that every time I would start the engine in the mornings and it would go away when warm. Lately it has been doing those sounds even when car is warm and running; When the car is idle I rev the engine and you can hear the sound louder. But that damn sound goes away when it wants. Like a couple of days ago I stoped at this gas station that's right next to this audi tunnin shop and I heard the noise, so I stoped next door and went to ask one of the technitians, Like 5 mins later when he came out, the freaking sound went away. Does anybody have an idea of what this is?
I had the timing belt and all that stuff done @ 65k miles and now i'm at 73K.
And another thing, at times the coolant needle gauge goes completely to the left and a few minutes later or sometimes the next day it goes back to normal. This happens a couple times a month, not that often really, it just happend when I was coming home.
Thanks for your opinions.

Default Do you have the updated green coolant sensor? Under the accordian hose.

The black one tends to go out. And as far as i have read our motors do sound like a sewing machine at idle.

Default not sure, I know at idle it sounds like sewing machine but it gets louder

I hear the difference form normal idle and that sound. recently had the coolant tank and I think the pump changed, due to a leak, but that noise was there before as well. And not sure if that green coolant sensor is broken, if it was I guess the boys @ asp would have noticed it when changing the pump and the coolant tank.

Default tried that, didn't work...

although i believe my powersteering pump is broken because is a little hard to turn. Last owner probably messed it up. Actullay this didn't happen until a few k-miles after I bought the car. but now it makes a loud the loud sound not only when cold but when warm.

Default Sounds like cam chain tensioners need replacing.

The coolant temp thing is likely not related, I've got the same problem - probably a temp sensor sending unit.
