Strange noise from drivers side rear

I notice every now and then (usually right after startup) at noise that sounds similar to the pneumatic central locking pump going on and off in a rythm similar to a clock. It gets faster then stops. I finally was in a spot where I could stop the car to check it out and it seems the noise is coming from somewhere in the vicinity of the rear drivers side wheel well. I STF but wasn't sure what to search for. Any ideas? It's a 2001.5 S4 with 56k. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a pipe with a s-hose fitting there to the outside of the muffler. No one could give me an answer to what it was and if it could be why it was making noise.
Stick with it and lets figure this out.

Can't be a wheel bearing as the noise is evident when the car is at a complete stop. As for the muffler hose, I'll try to take a look at that. Oh, and I will lay off the beans

I read on another site about the central locking pump, but I thought that was on the passenger side. Also someone mentioned that B5 quattro's have a transfer pump in the fuel tank to get fuel over the hump. Any trugh to this?

new. It only happens once in a while and I can't reproduce it when asked so the dealer said if it gets worse bring it in.... well 6 years and 139K it's still there and the same intermittent squeaky pump noise. When it happens I just tell passengers it's a hamster on its little wheel.
