Default stupid question warning**...but with the imposing danger of syncro failure...

would it be possible to swap in a different gear system minus the syncros? I know it has to do with quattro (i think)...but just wondering if a porsche gearbox could be a future possibility.

I already went thru a set of 1st and 2nd syncros, and without a warranty now, im dreading the threat of another set failing. I am definately careful not to miss a shift or grind, and avoid hard shifts, but im just an inquiring mind.

thanks

Default Don Istook wrote some decent stuff about this....

My gearbox died big time, so I purchased a new one, had it stripped and cryogenically hardened before being reassembled.

The problem with the syncro has been attended to also by chamfering the edges of the appropriate gears within a "sliding sleeve".

When the gearbox goes back together, it should be able to handle additional torque and not jam in 1st & 2nd.

Hope this helps?

Default Here's the info from Istook....

"What happens to the 1st/2nd gear cluster is really minor, but it does cause shifting problems, even to the extent that the trans won't go into 1st or 2nd.

The sliding sleeve that goes over the 2nd gear engaging teeth (for lack of a better terminology, that is what we call it in a Porsche box) develops a very slight burr...the tolerances are so close that the "burr" can cause a glitch or even cause the trans to not even go into gear because the slider is in an interference fit over the engaging teeth.

A simple fix (yeah...simple....once the trans is out and apart)is to take a die grinder and put a very slight chamfer on the edge of the sliding sleeve and the edge of the engaging teeth...then reassemble the transmission. The only part you would actually need is a small gasket and new trans fluid.

We had this happen to our transmission at the Spoeedvision GT race at Laguna Seca a couple of years ago. We pulled the trans, chamfered the parts and put it back together again...no problems after that.

I think that Audi used to replace the entire trans under warranty, but they may now go in and replace the ist/2nd gear clusters. The parts could be repaired, but I am sure that they just replace them.

Default Sorry - didn't answer the original question...

There is a company in the UK called "Eurospec" who do a gearbox with revised ratios and tougnened gears for about GBP£3,000 exchange.

Top speed is limited to a max of 150mph, but you can expect to see sub-mid 3 second 0-60 times and 11sec ¼ mile times using it.

Dammned if I can find out where they are though...

Best wishes,

Ram

I believe those gears are for a 5 cylinder.
