i was thinking about that too.. i don't think that is the case at all
it came in my mind the very simple radar that is used to measure the speed of a hockey puck.. black bull rubber object.
and i also saw a bit of the "mith busters" episode when they were tring to proove that the laser can't pick up certain cars.. it did in every case (one was a dull black painted car with no lic. plate up front- almost like my car

Don't be so smug...
They are quite adept at aiming for a headlight...and I can tell you it's still quite easy to get a reading off a headlight. OH troopers do it all the time when PA drivers come across the border. My 3 year penance is up this april.

They can still get ya without a front plate, but it's harder.
Just like a motorcycle... It's very difficult for them to clock a bike with LIDAR. It's more about the indian than the arrow if you catch my drift. =) But you can make it more difficult for them to get you. No front plate + a black car + no headlights would be pretty difficult for them. This could be any black car with popup headlights... I.e., Firebirds, early DSMs, etc.
