Supposedly how fast are the new 540is? Was lined up with one at a light tonight...
We both just sorta rolled off the line, he didn't seem interested in playing so I just lazily shifted into 2nd and then he gunned it, caught me off guard in the low rpms but i gunned it and he pretty much hung with me through 2nd and into the middle of third! I was pretty impressed.

Road tests put the two cars about equal...1/10 is not significant.
Bottom line is with these two cars, the better driver would win (6-speed versus 6-speed; a 6-speed S4 will handle a five-speed 540i with no problem).

If you'd still been in first when he romped it, you'd have kicked his butt.
Chipped S4's run from 0.6-0.7 faster than a 540i-6, but you lose a bunch of time if you don't use the gears to their fullest. If he'd have punched it a bit sooner while you were still in first, all he'd have seen were S4 taillights.

There about equal to a stock S4.
One of my relatives has one and it is, more or less, equally as fast as a stock S4, providing both cars are 6-speed. At highers speeds (i.e., above 100) the 540 might have an advantage due to the V8. It's an excellent car and I probably would choose it over my S4...or maybe not.
