The flow rate through the OEM housing was maxing out the MAF voltage output
You engineer types please smack and correct me if I am wrong but if the ECU isn't remapped with this housing, you will be flowing more air than what the ECU thinks, resulting in nasty pre-explosions

MAF measures air density no?
With a greater diameter, the air density goes down but the volume of air is greater. Reason for the larger MAF housing is to allow more air to enter while maintaining operational voltage range of the MAF sensor.

well....here is my guess (if you are correct)
say 0V-5.0V output is the analog output with O volts being equal to some given flow and 5.0V to another given, max flow.
say you get more flow, but the sensor (MAF) can only put out 5V output, then the engine would be getting more air then expected....
however, it all depends on system level software (like that contained in the ECU)...if there is no MAX voltage output expected from the sensor (doubt it!) then the ECU could extrapolate ont eh given transfer function...however i don't think they owuld design it with NO cap on voltage inpurt to the ECU from the MAF...just my 2 cents..
