Swap battery without losing settings?

My battery is low enough to just slowly crank the car but not start it. I bought a new battery, and I plan on swapping it out myself.
How can I replace the battery without losing any of the critical settings such as keyfob(remote) programming, or the radio code?
I've asked around, and the general consensus is that the settings will still be lost if I replaced the battery with the car running. What do you guys think?
TIA

A stray spark from one of the terminals could be the end of some electronic gismo somewhere.

1) take a third (good) battery and jump it to a ground and the positive terminal cable.
2) disconnect and remove the terminal cables from the old battery.
3) install the new battery and hook up the terminal cables.
4) remove the jumper cables.
That will keep juice in the system at all times.
BUT NOTE!!! this is quite risky as the positive will always be live and cannot touch the body of the car. I personally wouldn't do it and if I did I would make sure that I had someone else around to help me and support the positive cable. When you are disconnecting the positive you cannot let a tool touch anywhere even if you have already removed the ground (and it is a very good idea to remove the ground first as then you will only blow up one battery instead of two). YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
If I were going to do this then I'd prefer a very small battery -- say a motorcycle battery -- as that way it would make less of a bang if I somehow blew it and myself up.

This will be enough voltage to keep your settings while you change your batt. Check your FLAPS for availability :-)
