Are there any good winter tires that fit on the stock 17" Avus wheels?

Boston becomes the pot hole kingdom in the Winter.
I damaged some Potenza's last Winter, because the pot holes get filled with water and hard to see.
Which of the suggestions have the best/strongest sidewall? Should I go 225/... or 235/... ?

...your best choice would be 205-55-16. But it you want to stick with a 17" rim, go with 225-45-17 or even 215-width tire. I recall some folks mentioning that in the past.

hey smokin',
what 16 inch rims do you have? I am thinking about doing the a4 5 spoke replicas ($100ea), just for dedicated winter tires/rims.
Does anyone know if the 16" A4 wheels clear the S4 calipers OK?
Any other cheap/attractive solutions?

I got these for three reasons:
1) inexpensive rims
2) 205/50/16 can take the abuse of potholes and randon winter better than low profiles
3) Winter performance
It was their S4 pre-winter special for about $1000
