Are there tell-tale signs of a tiptronic tranny "starting to go"? Be it the TC or any other bit?

Default Usually, you can tell alot from the fluid...

Syphon a bit out, and smell it. Is it burnt? How is the consistency?

How are shifts? Do they slip?

Default Yes and No.

Talking to several transmission builders I have heard that some transmissions can smell burnt and have lots of particles in the fluid and last forever while other brands are toast when they look like that.

The problem is no one really knows how the ZF (Audi) transmission is when it looks/smells like that.

Default Many symptoms...

Runs hot, throws codes
TC Lock sticks and makes for clunky down shifts, or engine stalls.
Shifts take longer, slip more at high torque.
Lots of particles on the magnets in the sump
