is there a way to shift gears smoothly enough that that back-forth sensation is gone? if so, how?

Default Two things made a world of difference in my car...

First, the AWE DTS made a huge difference. Secondly, when I did a full bleed of my brake fluid and changed it to Motul 600 two weeks ago, for whatever reason I'm able to shift now with just a tiny flick of the clutch, whereas before that I had to really get on the clutch to change gears. Multiple times in the dealer for that got me nowhere, but something about either running the Motul or the bleeding process itself made such a huge difference, I have no problem shifting smoothly any more.

rev match on the way down. up would probably take a DTS or snub mount.

Up shifting, just be smooth. Down shifting, match revs.

Am I missing something? How would changing brake fluid have any effect on shifting?????

Default Brake and *clutch* share the same fluid...

So changing out brake fluid can affect your clutch thus affect your shifting.

Default Yeah, I'm assuming that when my car was in the shop for three months...

for that and other tranny-related problems, bleeding the damn hydraulic system never crossed their minds. It was amazing the difference. I actually drove around for two weeks after shifting the way I used to until the other day I realized I barely have to touch the clutch any more to shift... I went from probably 2" of required clutch motion to disengage it to probably more like half an inch... before I had to always push it past the point as which you really start to feel the return spring's pressure, now I don't even have to push it to the point where I feel that unless I'm just initially getting into first or reverse.

Now, I think my car was bad from the factory, but I wonder how many people out there who have had as much trouble driving the 6-speed as I did have the same problem.

Default Brake and clutch often share the same system...

I don't think swapping out brake fluid in and of itself will affect the clutch much. I think in George's case, he had some bad fluid or air in the system which affected his clutch. Once the system was drained out and flushed, it made all the difference.
