Default No, but you can clutch in, bring the revs up a touch so it won't stall and do a smooth let-off...

Car has more than enough torque to start from a dead stop in 2nd without straining the clutch. The difference between 1-2mph and "idle" speed in 2nd is so minor, its no different to the clutch than starting from a stop in first...

Default Your synchro is probably going...

I doubt there are many people who can shift well enough to safely put an S4 into 1st while moving. I know better than to do it... because "working" and not damaging things are two very different things.

Default What about going up a hill with traffic at <5mph?

That's a first gear feat. So what happens in this situation when you find yourself going from >5mph and then below it, often repeatedly? You either find a way to shift into first, or you find a way to afford that new clutch.

Default I agree, forcing it into 1st is never a good thing

But there are often times when there is no other real option. I'll take my chances with the 1st gear syncro and save my clutch for another day. It's not like this is a problem unique to Audis or S4s - MANY cars are like this.
