I bought a used 2000 s4 5 months ago and I am wondering if it is chipped. I got my car up to 145mph and it felt like it had a lot more. I thought the limiter kicked in at 143mph. So, I was thinking it might be chipped. Some people have talked about speedometer error at high speeds. Maybe I wasn't really going 145mph. Anybody know what's going on?

The rev limiter and the speed limiter are not the same. They are inderpendent of one another.
The rev limiter is to keep the engine speed to what VAG considers a safe operating range (too high and the valves don't close in time).
The speed limit is designed to keep the veichle operating at a what VAG considers safe given the setup. The tyres if run for a long period of time above the limit could fail due to heat build up.
There are much more capable people than myself who I'm sure will critic this reply.

and that was just in 5th. I'd imagine the speedo is somewhat off, but by how much I don't know.

...that's stock of course. Chipped with an exhaust, most S4's can come close to or do 170. I've been 10 past that with K04's now.
