Maybe you could have wired in "safety eyes" to trigger the door to not open if the car was lifted.

The vertical tracks for the left door are for an 8ft door, this brings the turn closer to the ceiling. Rather than add another door section to make the opener geometry right, I built a door section from angle steel, seen above the normal door sections. Note that the opener track is directly on the ceiling on the left. One drawback of this approach is that I had to loosen up the weatherstripping at the top of the door. The normal door pulls away from the wall as soon as it starts to move up. The high lift door goes parallel to the wall for a bit before it pulls away. I need to find a different type of weatherstrip that will not interfere with it.

Good idea. I tried to remember to pull the safety release whenever using the lift
