Dunlop M2's, but it depends where you live (how much/often snow, etc)

I live in Michigan! M-2's had great reviews on Tire Rack.

Default very. I had them on my A4 and now S4.... (lots of pics :)

I've been driving 40k miles/year in NY/CT/MA and for that mix of mileage and winter climate, I need something in the winter that will handle cold dry roads the majority of the winter, and then snow/slush/rain/etc when those days occur. The M2's have worked out to be a great mix of dry traction/handling as well as a very capable snow tire. They handle nicely in the dry and I haven't gotten stuck once in some really bad storms.

Dunlop Winter Sport M2
225/45R17 on my S4
205/55R16 on my A4

But most of the winter, the roads are dry and lightly sanded/salted:
