Default Took the car in for routine maintenance, and the dealer wants to replace the tie rod ends...

I took the car in to get a few things fixed, maintenance, and to do an alignment. I was told by a rep that when they went to do the alignment they noticed the tie rod ends are faulty and said they can't do the alignment without replacing them. They want $595 for the tie rod ends. Is this right?

PureMS is your friend, should be <$100, very easy DIY.

Default It's expensive...but they are right.

If the tie rod ends are bad, any alignment they do is subject to error based on how bad the tie rods are, and you'll need to do another alignment when you get the tie rods replaced as well. Best to do it all at once...now or later...preferably before you screw up the tires.

Most likely will need alignment though...

Aren't the tie rods usually under warrenty? Also wasn't there a recall on them a while back?

Default No recall, generally considered wear and tear, though it doesn't hurt to ask.

Some people (very rare) have managed to get their tie rods repaired under the 4 yr 50K warranty. None have had the tie rods covered under Audi Assured (addt'l 2 yr/100K warranty for certified cars).

In general, I would be prepared for "it's not covered".

Default I just went through something like that. Dealer noticed a bad tie rod end. They wanted ...

something like $300 to replace the bad tie rod end. Instead I ordered 2 of the Lemforder ones from PureMS. I got a quote of $400 to install the 2 so I put them in myself. When I was replacing them I found that both were finished.

Had the dealer do the alignment and fix a loose seat and when I got the car back my air bag light was on and the car would always veer to the left with the wheel centered but that is just another sloppy dealer story.
