anyone who's bought an S4 so far trade in an A4
for it? what kind of percentage-of-retail did
you get for the A4? i've got a relatively recently purchased A4 which i love, but am being drawn towards the extra zippiness of the S4. i'm interested in hearing what kind of deals people in a similar situation have received. thanks!

I tried to trade my 98 1.8TS-tip with 45k miles at the very same dealer where I bought the 1.8T. I also paid msrp for S4, so that should have affected a bit. However, they were offering me only 16k or so. Car new was almost $28k. Granted, car had high miles, but I sold car last week for $19500. Took a while, and spent almost $300 in advertising.
Tristan '00 S4, oops, I mean '99 Pontiac (rental, since I spun out and hurt my baby)
yes, i am a moron

I traded in a '98 A4 2.8 tip with 53K miles. Taking mileage into account, I got $2400 LESS than Kelly Blue Book shows for the trade in (low) figure. Ouch.
I'm sure I could have sold it for more, but I didn't have the time or the inclination. The pain evaporated the instant I turned the ignition key on my new S4!

I actually purchased an aftermarket warranty from Allstate (least expensive and best for coverage I've found) and added that to the price. Then I wrote "for sale" on back windshield and parked it in front of my apt. complex. I then ran an ad in the local huge paper for about three weeks. I got about 50 total calls (about half of them from apt. dwellers where I live.... they saw me washing it twice a week and KNEW I took care of it). I got about ten people who actually wanted to look at it. I got two people who actually said they "wanted it" and the closest one to where I lived got it. SOLD for 19.5k. The high miles seemed to scare people off, so that prompted me to get the warranty. One that took the car to 100k miles cost about $1400.
yes, I did disclose that the car had .8 Bar TAP chip.
This is the second time that I have stuck it out and sold the car outright and actually won. Cost me a little bit of stress, but that's better than a $3000 check to bank!

I had to give up my S4 when it arrived because my dealer would only offer me $15,000 in trade for my 98 A4QM30V with all the options, but 57,000 miles. I tried for weeks to sell it myself unsuccessfully (about 5 inquiries, only one serious). I listed it on A4.org and Yahoo Classifieds and got 2 e-mails (from kids, not serious).
On a lark, I tried another dealership with an unreserved S4 sitting on the lot. They offered me $21,000 for it which was about $3,000 less than Kelly's Blue Book, but dead on for NADA retailer figures (everyone agrees that KBB seems high). They also discounted the S4 by $1,000 so their deal was almost $7,000 better than the other dealer. Shop for a dealer who wants your business. You'll be glad you did.
