Default Trouble finding B5 S4 gear ratios and final drive ratio. NE1 know off top of their head?

I want to compare it to a car with a 4.38:1 first gear and 3.06:1 final drive ratio.

Default OK math question: if I want to find overall 1st gear ratio, I multiply the gear ratio x the final

drive ratio correct? If so I get 14.3885:1 for the manual S4 I am used to, and only 13.4028 for the SLK55. Does not sound promising, but maybe a taller first + torque convertor slippage makes sense with only 2WD. And if you compare it to the tip S4 which is 12.868:1 it looks aggressive.

Default yeah, a little taller first gear is a good thing, IMO. do a comparison of the autos.

3.665*3.551 for the s4 = 13.014415. so it shorter than a tip s4.

the slippage in the tc makes an the overall ratio a bit shorter anyway.

So am I figuring effective ratio in each gear properly - gear x final = overall?

Default yep - but like you mentioned, there's a fudge factor for manual vs. automatic.

i used to do a little rockcrawling/4wheeling and because of the slippage in an auto, you can always get away with running a little taller gear. i ran 4.56s in my jeep (manual) when auto guys would often run 3.73s or even stock 3.55s.

Default Here is the full list of the Merc auto ratios. I like that it is not 1:1 until 5th which is super-

tight ratio.

1st gear 4.38
2nd gear 2.86
3rd gear 1.92
4th gear 1.37
5th gear 1.00
6th gear 0.82
7th gear 0.73
Reverse gear 3.42
Final drive 3.06
