a friend of mine told me that when sitting at a light, in traffic, etc it's not good to leave your foot down on the clutch pedal because it wears down the clutch. I find that hard to believe since it's not actually doing work. Anyone got a definitive answer?

is on the floor. the throw-out bearing bears nearly all the brunt of the clamping force of the clutch. just pop it in neutal and save the poor thing some wear.

with my clutch down, foot on it, car in 1st gear ready to go. I've had multiple cars (all manuals)with hundreds of thousands of miles of driving and never had a clutch go bad or a throwout bearing go bad.
My S4's clutch came out (the original stocker) at 87,000miles when my KO4s were installed. It still looked fine.
I simply cannot imagine that keeping the clutch pedal pressed down in traffic or at traffic lights can make a significant difference in the lifespan of anything (at least in my experience).
My guess is that ONE launch that is not done perfectly is harder on your clutch's total lifespan than sitting in traffic with the clutch down during years of driving.

That can cause the throw out bearing to wear out prematurely. Sitting at a light in gear is not going to cause a problem.
