Tweaking exhaust system on S4

I was told that the middle silencer(one after cats) was the unit that had all or most of the "restrictions" and by removing that and replacing with performance muffler, it would give you similar if not the same gains that aftermarket would get.As well as improved sound.
Then I heard screwing with the system can make the car slower. Any body have any input?

I removed the resonator after I chipped the car because I felt that the add boost was just being shocked by the exhaust. I removed the resonater and replaced it with a regular straight pipe. That eliminated the "sandblaster" sound and helped the engine breath a little easier. The exhaust sound was a bit annoying at first but after a few weeks the exhaust mellowed and I now only have a nice low tone sound at low RPM. As far as performance, I didn't feel anything different that is why I ordered the VM2 and AWE S-flow kit.
Lehigh S4

I built a custom dual 3" SS system for my S4 and routed the pipes to both sides of the vehicle. Only one central muffler is on the car now and it really rumbles. Go to my website for further details and pics. Click over to the S4 link.

http://icdweb.cc.purdue.edu/~kor/welcome.htm</a

I replaced my stock system with a 3" stainless catback, I am also running a GIAC chip, and I felt no gain at all, and even less performance in many situations. Others on this board will argue that less restriction is good, yes to a point, but it also means you lose low end response. For a car designed like the S4, for extreme instant low end torque, you are ruining the factory design of the whole system by replacing the stock parts with straight through designs. I know everyone wants to "upgrade", but this is one area that should be left alone. I really doubt the systems on the market really add any significant performance at all in most normal situations. The one exception might, and I mean might be, the UUC VM2 due to its dual design.
However if you really need the big chrome tips, go for it.
