Default Unknown engine noise...

I have a metalic noise which seems to be coming from the engine. It is a sort of tinny sound and seems to be most noticable at idle and seems to vary with the RPM of the engine. If I were to guess, I would say it was coming from the middle cylinder on the left bank but I could easily be wrong about that.

Any ideas what it might be?

No and it isn't the rattle kind of sound. It has a definate rythm to it.

No. It is noticable at idle and above. To me, it sounds loudest with my ear right over that point.

Default EXACT same noise

Thought it was a heatshield, but they all seem to be ok. Noticeable just above idle, and when "lugging" from 800-1500 or so. Metallic Rattling coming from the middle of the engine bay area underneath.

Default Yes, exactly...

Quite loud. Easily noticed when idling and sitting in the car. Very noticable standing next to the engine. Obviously RPM dependent and not load dependent.

Really seems to be to be something to do with the upper valve gear.

Oh, and it has got louder and more noticable with time.

Default Cam tensioner?

I just had one of my cam tensioners replaced under extended warranty. Symptoms similar to what you describe -- ticking metallic noise at idle, frequency increased when I revved the engine a bit. Once I got past 1-1.5k RPMs I couldn't hear it anymore. Service folks claim they used a stethoscope type device to determine which bank's tensioner was failing.

Worst part of it all was that I discovered the noise when picking the car up after scheduled maint. Bah. Dealership has had it since the 28th, I'm supposed to get it back today.
