I had what I thought was the beginnings of a turbo failure. I had some of the sounds that I've heard others say they had when their turbo went bad except no smoke. The sound was a high pitched, high revving marbles in a blender type of sound ...much different than a "normal" turbo whine. After a few WOT the sound went away and than I was in limp mode. After finally taking off the TBB (thinking no way this was my problem) and low and behold, look what I found. I had a spare for just such an occasion (my first tear some 52k miles later). After replacing, the car has returned to her "normal" turbo whinning self with some head snapping WOT : )
Moral of the story: Don't assume a loud dentist drill sound means bad turbo. i think your turbo was louder b/c it was overspinning to compensate
between the difference in actual adn requested boost...glad you found your problem! you probabaly saved your turbos by finding this.
