I have a BearTracker, and that will pick up most police cars even if they don't have radar on because it scans for signals from their radio extenders.

Do they have to be communicating in order for the bear tracker to pick them up, or is there a constant signal being emitted by the communications equipment on board, that you'll have no worries?
Do all state troopers use the same frequency, or does it vary by state, and municipality? Is there some what to program in which state you're in, so it can look for the proper signals?
What about the antennas that the bear tracker requires for effective use. Anything suitable for high speed driving, or even an in-the-car antenna?
Any false alarms with the bear tracker?
Although it's a lot more clunky than a RD, my imagination is leading me to believe this is the holy grail for high speed road trips.

It varies by state -- you have to tell the device what state you are in, so it knows which frequencies are threatening. It'll pick up *any* police radio (it works as a scanner too), but certain bands used by their extenders will trigger an alert.
My understanding is that as general policy, officers on duty have to leave the extenders turned on, and they are always transmitting between the car's powerful radio, and the cops personal radio.
All I know is when I'm using it, it'll tend to blip even if there are unmarked cars around... I don't use it very often because the V1 is pretty damn good, but occasionally I'll pull it out.
I'm not sure if they still make them or not, I've had it for like eight or nine years.

http://www.uniden.com/pdf/BCT10om.pdf</a

Last time I checked, the externally mounted antennas wouldn't stay put at high speeds, making these somewhat of a PITA to use. I'll have to do a little homework. Thanks for the info!
