Valve Stems: Rubber vs Metal...?

one valve stem had a split down the side of the rubber casing...
not sure if the metal ones would prevent that or not....
could be like brake lines... salt/sand gets inside the (non-DOT) SS braiding and errodes the rubber/silicone and by by brake fluid (air).
i guess it all depends on the valve stems. i say just go with whatever the mounter gives you, and smile. no one will ever notice even at a car show. put some crappy metal hex head valve caps on there with some anti-seize (trying to take one off split my other valve stem), and make sure you change the valve stems when you change the tires (they don't always do this, lewis VW/Audi certainly didn't and probably for that reason mine failed (5 years old)).
