Valvetrain noise/chatter.
I'll start by saying I understand that from what I've read that for the most part many VAG motors have a noticeable amount of valvetrain chatter.
Mine sort of sounds like a sewing machine when it is idling. It has always sort of sounded like this, and I know the motor is strong and there is nothing wrong with it.(Knock on wood.) I've been running 0w-30 synthetic since 5000 miles. I'm now at 45k. I read a couple of threads indicating this chattery noise is normal especially on the Audi 30 valve V6. Obviously inside the car or when driving this doesn't bother me one bit. It is usually only noticeable when the car is idling and I'm standing outside the car. It just doesn't sound as quiet as I feel a $40k car should be.
What I'm wondering is if a heavier oil may be in order to avoid lifter bleed down. I usually run AMSOIL S2000 0w-30, but tried Mobil1 0w-40 last time around with no discernable difference in noise. Not to mention I now believe the Mobil 0w-40 to be pretty much technically equivalent to the AMSOIL 0w-30.
I'm thinking of trying the new AMSOIL 5w-40 and wanted to see if anyone can comment on reduction of valvetrain noise using this oil.
TIA
