Default Very loud noise from rear of car, I've stfa, but nothing logical

The car has progressively been getting louder and louder from the rear. It's at all speeds - but the loudest now at 45-50 when just rolling or under very light throttle (at this point it sounds like you are sitting in small twin engine plane). It's not a wheel bearing issue - as turning makes no difference in the sound. At the worst point I'm also now noticing a bit of vibration in the car - mostly just from thing in the cabin. The sound is very similar to a bad wheel bearing when it's under pressure - but much louder than that at times.

All I can think is something drivetrain related? Any ideas? Tires are not showing any strange wear.

Are you sure it's not a wheel bearing? The reduction of sound you get when turning is not as noticeable on the rear bearings because there is less weight and the suspension leans less...

Most likely it is a bad bearing, but it could be a bad differential

x2. I vote for wheel bearing still.

I really really don't think it's a bearing. I've had plenty of them go bad in the past, and the sound is different. It's louder and very consistant - bearing always seem to change noise level and pitch when you turn. It's also more middle of the car from what I can tell. With a bearing you can typically hear it more on the specific side.

You thinking failed center support bearing? plausible, could even be a bad CV in the rear.

Agreed - check the drive shaft connections, the final drive differential and the joints.

finallyturbos - Just curious, when you let off of the throttle, does sound go away? I was just getting ready to post about a whirring noise in the rear and happen to catch your post first. After reading Don's link, I may have a similar problem. Mine really shudders at low speeds and tight turns and similarity to yours.

donromani - thanks for the link - Has anyone ever ordered from them?
