Default Weird problem.

After extended travel at higher speeds (70+), my car smokes with an awful smell and drips a small amount of oil. I took it in and the dealer says there is nothing wrong - no leaks. This is really starting to irritate me. I'm taking the car back in today.

Any thoughts?

It could be cosmoline (Sp?) burning off and dripping.

Default It's a rust/corosion inhibitor that is sprayed on the bottom of your car from the factory.

It is offen mistaken for leaking or burning oil.

Is your car brand new? You're more likely to see what you've described if brand new.

Also, how's your oil level? Is it down? This would surely indicate the potential for a leak somewhere.

Default It is almost 2 years old (more)

However, in that time, I have very rarely taken the car on extended highway trips. It only has 14K miles.

My oil level looks good, but there was a very small amount of oil on my garage floor. The tech at my dealer never mentioned the possibility of cosmoline.

Default I had a similar small oil leak recently. The tech said my oil pan appeared to be porous

and allowing oil to slowly seep through. I don't know if he was full of it or not, but they replaced my oil pan. We'll see...

Interesting. I'll have them check it. Thanks for the thoughts.
