It looks like some oil may have been leaking out of the valve covers but it seems as if it must have been coming from someplace else too. At first I just thought the filter was loose because there was a lot of oil on the outside of it, but there was oil residue up above the filter too. Is there any common location of leaking on the driver side?
Also, what kind of work is required in replacing the head gaskets? Do I have to pull the engine out? Hours???

if it's between the engine and tranny, it's usually your rear main seal, then others it's the oil return line from the turbo's and then you have the upper and lower oil pan gaskets etc.etc.
